Mosonmagyaróvár is a town in Győr-Moson-Sopron County in North Western Hungary. It lies close to both the Austrian and Slovakian borders. The town has a population of about 35,000 people with an additional 41,000 people living in the hinterland. We have an ageing population of which 17,000 people are over 60 years.
The Care Foundation (Gondoskodás Alapítvány) was established in 1998, its mission is to improve and support the work of social services and the quality of care provided. Our goal is to give a voice and to integrate people with dementia into our society.
We were delighted to establish a day care center in 2009 which has helped to improve the lives of people with dementia. Due to the lack of funding we rely on our committed staff and volunteers to ensure continuation of service.
Mosonmagyaróvár was one of the first towns in Hungary to organize Alzheimer Café gatherings in 2015 which helped us to begin a real dialogue with the public. As a result people living with dementia and their caregivers are now more likely to come forward to ask for help and advice.
The Care Foundation launched the Dementia Friendly Mosonmagyaróvár project in the summer of 2017 which is the first such initiative in Hungary. The project is supported by our Local Government with the aim of increasing community awareness and understanding of dementia.
We would like to provide new opportunities for social participation and involvement within the community for people living with dementia. We encourage people with dementia to speak up for the changes they feel are necessary i.e. early diagnosis, post diagnostic supports and the pathway of care. We need to remove stigma and work with decision-makers on both a local and a national level to bring about this change.
People with dementia can live happy and productive lives and with the right supports they can remain fully integrated in their communities.
We are very proud to say that our work and commitment for people living with dementia has been acknowledged by the European Foundations’ Initiative on Dementia and we received their prestigious EFID Award 2017.
